Horse Trails in the Central Washington Cascades

Snoqualmie Pass • Alpine Lakes Wilderness • Yakima River Headwaters

The Central Washington Cascades sit at the crossroads of accessibility and true mountain riding. This region includes some of the most heavily used Cascade corridors, alongside quieter backcountry routes that branch away from the passes and river valleys.

Riding here ranges from forested climbs and alpine basins to east-slope routes with earlier snowmelt, making it a versatile region for riders willing to balance crowds, seasonality, and terrain.

Current listings: 3 trails
Best season: Summer through early fall (varies by elevation)

Snoqualmie Pass & I-90 Corridor

High-use access points with maintained trails and short approach distances.

This area offers some of the easiest access into the Cascades, which also means heavier summer traffic. Expect shared-use trails and limited parking during peak season.

  • Gold Creek / Snoqualmie Pass routes (stock access varies)
  • Kendall Katwalk approaches (designated stock routes only)
  • Commonwealth Basin connectors

Alpine Lakes Wilderness

Granite basins, alpine lakes, and classic Cascade backcountry.

These routes are among the most scenic in the region but come with strict wilderness regulations and seasonal constraints. Snow lingers late, and access windows can be short.

East-Slope Foothills

Drier terrain, broader valleys, and earlier seasonal access.

The eastern slope of the range opens earlier in many years and offers different footing and vegetation than west-side routes. These trails often provide longer riding seasons and fewer crowds.

Planning Notes for This Region

  • Snowpack strongly affects higher routes into mid-summer
  • Popular trails see heavy use on weekends
  • Wilderness areas have stock limits and regulations
  • Parking at pass-level trailheads is limited
  • Conditions can vary widely between west and east slopes

Always confirm stock access and current conditions before hauling.
