Since we leave in just 13 days, and I will be out of town next week I figured I should shuffle my packs together and see what I’m missing and what I can take out. My new Backcountry rear pack from HorseBums should be shipping soon, but in the meantime, challenge accepted.

I have my new Heather bag which I started using for my front back pack, but when I ordered a new one the design had changed a bit. The bag on top (withers area) is now much bigger and I’d been trying to figure out what to do since this might be annoying in front of the pommel… or when in need of grabbing the oh shit handle. Mane grabs forever. Its truly meant as a cantle bag so I suppose that’s what I should try it as.

So I got a hunch that my gear is so small and compact now that maybe all of it would just fit in two Heather bags. Using the new updated design in the back to get the bag out of my way, and my old trusty one up front. Well, it fits.

My rear packs have my sleep system, tent, power bank, towel, bug spray, and horse supplies. They fit perfect. I may have gone so ultralight that my new packs coming soon will be too giant. My front pack is perfect for clothes, cords, kitchen supplies and still has plenty of room for food and grain. Even my BV425 bear canister fits in these packs. All in all I’m super impressed I was able to cut so much weight over the winter. Final rear pack weight including a highline which we typically share and I don’t carry = 12.5lbs. Front packs minus food and grain are at 4.7lbs. I suspect I will be adding 6lbs of grain, and 2-3lbs of food for a total pack weight of 26.2lbs! On this upcoming trip I don’t believe I will bring a highline so 24.7lbs may be our absolute final. I’ll weigh it up before we hit the trail 🤍
